CGAI Podcast - Disaster Response Systems for Canada

It was a great pleasure to discuss disaster response and civil defence in Canada with Colin Robertson looking at Germany's Federal Agency for Technical Relief's model for a structured, volunteer-driven, and federally coordinated disaster response system on this episode of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute

With one approach, we can achieve multiple goals:
- increase individual and national resilience,
- build a civil defence corps to ensure the survival of the population in wartime,
- add currently missing capacity and capabilities to ensure continuity of essential services to the population as part of disaster response and recovery,
- support provincial and municipal response other than financially or by deploying the CAF Lentus
- strengthen societal cohesion,
- support EM-modernization to
- shift our reactive system to proactive readiness via
- youth leadership in changing our culture of preparedness through disaster skills training and capacity building
