CPYC Joins Roundtable on Environmental Security & Climate Risks
On April 30, 2025, CPYC President Eva Cohen joined an expert panel at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) Canada roundtable in Ottawa, exploring the intersection of environmental change, military leadership, and disaster readiness in Canada.
The panel—featuring Mr. Dale Beugin (Canadian Climate Institute), Colonel Derek J. Lay (Canadian Armed Forces), and Eva Cohen (CPYC)—discussing future risks and their perspective on the actions that we must take to overcome current and future challenges in Canada.
In her presentation, Eva highlighted the societal responsibilities tied to security in the face of escalating climate impacts, including the rise in severe weather events resulting in devastating disaster impact. She addressed key gaps in Canada’s current disaster response approach and proposed a systematic solution to strengthen Canada’s disaster response system through a cohesive citizen-based approach inspired by the long-standing success of Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW).
“It is as much about responsibility as it is about societal cohesion—especially in times of crises,” Eva emphasized.
